  • Buying a digital camera: Part 2, cameraphones

    Bhautik Joshi
    26 Nov 2014 | 10:56 am
(Part 2 of a five-part series. Read the first post here.) Cameras have been a regular feature in cellphones and smartphones for well over a decade now. They are common, cheap, and nearly everyone with a smartphone already has them. Cost On their own, smartphones typically range in cost from US$400-600 over their lifetime. Versatility & performance For casual shooting, many regard cameraphones as ‘good enough.’ Most are remarkably similar – they capture pictures in the 8-12 megapixel resolution range, tend to have no optical zoom and relatively poor low-light performance and poor…

  • Buying a digital camera: Part 1

    25 Nov 2014 | 1:27 pm
With the holiday season fast approaching, many of you are going to be thinking about getting a new camera. But there’s a bewildering array of cameras that you can buy – so how do you cut through the marketing hype to work out which one is right for you? Three competing factors should affect your choice: budget, versatility (how many different situations does it work in) and performance (how good the pictures are). Our four main systems to compare are camera phones, compact cameras (point-and-shoot), micro 4/3 systems, and Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) / Mirrorless Interchangeable…

If you aren’t already in the mood for the holidays, we’ve collected some beautiful food photos on our new Pinterest board that will make your mouth water. One recipe I’m excited to try out this year is Smitten Kitchen’s Crispy Sweet Potato Roast. Sweet potatoes are easily one of my favorite foods – partially because they’re nearly impossible to mess up, and they’re always delicious. Smitten Kitchen’s addition of a salsa verde garnish makes this recipe a refreshing twist on a Thanksgiving classic. Check out these other recipes by our very own Flickr foodies, and explore our…

  • What Does TCO Really Mean?

    Matthew Lewis
    13 Nov 2014 | 7:14 am
As with other types of software, when IT (or any software selection team) is in the process of procuring a messaging and collaboration solution, cost enters the discussion early. But, not understanding the nuances of total cost of ownership (TCO) can add up over time, both in CapEx and OpEx. In fact, a recent whitepaper from Osterman Research found that the majority of decision makers weren’t confident in the estimates on messaging costs. The figure below provides the breakdown. Confidence in Estimates of Messaging Costs Source: Osterman Research. “The TCO of Enterprise Email” User…
  • One Brand, One Organization: Keys to M&A Success

    12 Nov 2014 | 7:12 am
A recent interview with Zimbra CEO, Patrick Brandt, and After Nines Content Czar, Joe Panettieri, focused on successful tech M&A strategy. To no surprise, the conversation continually came back to the role of corporate culture. In fact, Patrick made the point that it can often be one of the single most important factors in determining the success of a merger or acquisition. While it is obvious that technology alignment is crucial, the human factor is sometimes overlooked. The quicker you merge the disparate organizations into one, the easier it is for other parts of integration to move…
  • Zimbra Collaboration Updates (8.0.9 & 8.5.1)

    Matthew Lewis
    6 Nov 2014 | 10:00 am
Yesterday, Zimbra released updates to Zimbra Collaboration, both the 8.0.x and 8.5.x trees. Security These updates address the OpenSSL security advisory dated October 15 and provide a partial fix for POODLE (due to the need for both client and server changes). Zimbra Collaboration 8.0.9 and 8.5.1 update the OpenSSL libraries for nginx, OpenLDAP and Postfix to OpenSSL 1.0.1j. Mailboxd doesn’t use OpenSSL, but Zimbra Collaboration 8.6 (coming soon) should fix the issue(s). These updates provide only a partial fix to POODLE, as TLS_FALLBACK_SCSV must be implemented on server and client sides.
