User experience, or UX, is an interesting topic in technology. A lot of ink is spilled on the importance of user experience, and it is an area of intense focus for technology M&A. Is this just the latest hype-fueled technology bubble, or is it the real deal? The answer simply is yes. It’s both hype and real. If we look at the major SaaS/cloud companies that are delivering business applications, and even consumer applications, their rise has generally been predicated on the surge of user experience-driven design. A prime example is Salesforce. Marc Benioff completely changed customer…

Adrian Murray has been on an emotional roller coaster the last year and a half: Twice he almost lost his young son to a medical disorder. When he decided to take photos of the boy to capture every moment, he discovered that he had a passion for photography. In the summer of 2013, Adrian had just moved to Louisville, Kentucky, with his wife Michelle and their 10-month-old son, Emerson. He was settling in and preparing to attend dental school when he found out that Michelle was pregnant with their second child. All seemed well until two weeks after moving, when the unexpected happened: Emerson…

Which is more fun for you, the sketches, that gestational period where you’re putting all the pieces together, or the shoot itself? They’re all so different… The preproduction is dragged out forever and allowed time to marinate. The shoot happens so quickly that it’s a whole separate type of energy, which is great for its unique intensity. My favorite part is the moment when the post–production is finished and I can just sit with the final image. The interaction with the photo itself at that point is its own experience, which is always more enjoyable to me than the actual creation…

    15 Dec 2014 | 11:33 am
It seems every week we have a new article about either a business or vendor trying to “kill” email. Simply put, email isn’t going anywhere, anytime soon. Yes, it will evolve, e.g., SaaS and mobile, but the intent of email remains the same, which is providing users with a tool for continuous conversation, file sharing and supplying a single pane of glass for multiple conversations. In this four-part series, we will briefly discuss four key considerations when selecting a new email solution. These considerations are pulled from an Osterman Research whitepaper, What You Should Consider…

Despite several upgrade those past few years, Yahoo! Mail has not been very stable lately. You find bugs here and there. Some elements fail to load. Sometimes the whole thing is down. The newly published book Marissa Mayers and the Fight to Save Yahoo! by Nicholas Carlson presents a great insight of what’s going on right now at Yahoo! he also presents the efforts that have been made by the Yahoo! Mail team and how Mayer has approached the problem — The honeymoon between Marissa Mayer and Yahoo’s roughly fifteen thousand employees lasted about a year. It began the day the…

Yahoo to move Santa Monica operations to Playa Vista: From the L.A Times Yahoo Inc. is moving its Santa Monica operations to Playa Vista, joining the droves of major tech companies that have opened offices in the booming Westside neighborhood. The Sunnyvale, Calif., Internet company signed a long-term lease for about 130,000 square feet at the new Collective campus in Playa Vista. Marissa Mayer and the Fight to Save Yahoo!: An excellent book that I highly recommend When Yahoo hired star Google executive Mayer to be its CEO in 2012 employees rejoiced. They put posters on the walls throughout Yahoo’s California headquarters. On them there was Mayer’s face and one word: HOPE. But one year later, Mayer sat in front of those same employees in a huge cafeteria on Yahoo’s campus and took the beating of her life. Her hair wet and her tone defensive, Mayer read and answered a series of employee-posed questions challenging the basic elements of her plan. There was anger in…

Yahoo Shuts Down Right Media Exchange: From Business Insider: Yahoo has called time on the Right Media ad exchange it bought in 2007 for $680 million and has folded it into the wider Yahoo Ad Exchange proposition. Right Media was focused on delivering high-volume ads to big audiences — primarily to performance ad networks looking to place cheap direct-response ads — across Yahoo sites and those that were not in the Yahoo family. In other words, the inventory isn’t regarded as the most quality in the industry. It used to be the ad exchange for MySpace for example: Reams of low quality…
